The GTL kicks off NFL Week 1 2008 with his straight up picks...GTL’s NFL Picks, Week One, 2008 – Ladies and gentlemen, that’s right; each year I pick the weekly straight-up winners of the NFL games and I’m not too bad at it either as you can see from my record last year. Don’t bet the house on my picks; this is always just for fun and I don’t pretend to be any sort of expert on the topic of NFL football; this is just something we do here at The GTL™ to break up the political discourse and it’s always fun to see what goes on in the comments sections of these weekly posts. In other words, feel free to make your own picks or agree/disagree with mine. That said, let’s take a snapshot look at the 2008 NFL season just for fun…

Biggest news of the year: Definitely Brett Favre’s (legal, of course, as ALL migrations SHOULD be) migration from Green Bay, Wisconsin to New York, New York to start at QB for the hapless Jets. Question marks — will the Jets be a contender as a result? Will Favre lead the Jets to that Land-O-Plenty called the “NFL Playoffs”? I answer affirmative — there’s no way but UP for the Jets and their fans and there’s no way but DOWN for Brett Favre (face it) but I believe Favre still has a couple more good years in him. Look at the Kansas City Chiefs after Joe Montana made his “legal immigration” from San Francisco to K.C. — some say he “slipped” but he didn’t — his numbers were fantastic and one of those years the Chiefs made it to the AFC Championship Game behind his precision arm. I see the same thing happening in NY behind the leadership, experience and presence of Brett Favre. You may disagree and I may be wrong. If so, feel free to O-PINE below.

So, here we go again. No matter who your favorite team is, this is the last week of the year where you can rest well knowing your team is STILL undefeated. There are no bi-weeks and there will likely be no ties, so half of the teams’ fans will be heartbroken and the other half will be dreaming those “Superbowl dreams” after the final Monday Night Football game has been played — that is, until Week 2 comes along. But hey — let’s not get ahead of ourselves — let’s take a gander at the Week 1, 2008 games and my predicted winners and losers.

LIBERALS LOVE THE NFL TOO!!! Other liberal political bloggers who also take a break each week to make their straight-up NFL picks: Rocky of iVoryTowerz; Nelson M. of The Liberal Journal

And hey, a “Righty” political blogger picks ‘em, too! NFL fans leave politics behind once they enter their favorite team’s arenas, by the way: Sam Penny of The Countertop Chronicle

Why oh why are you hatin’ on my Panthers? Show some love brother. :-)

  • The GTL™

Man, I love Jake Delhomme now… and just because I picked against ‘em doesn’t mean I’m rootin’ against ‘em… I’m only a “homer” when it comes to my Niners :-)

    NYG, 16 – Skins, 7 — WOO-HOO — I’m battin’ 1000 so far ;-)

Eli Manning: 19 of 35 for 216 yards and an interception…

    HMM.

  • The GTL™

Oops — forgot to congratulate my fellow political bloggers for also batting 1000 thus far, with the SOLE exception of our friend Nelson M. of The Liberal Journal for taking a gamble on the ‘Skins — lots of games left though :-)

Just have to mention that everytime i scroll through your blog and pass the picture of Young with the DRATS you have up I get a chuckle out of that. It’s one of those Fargo or Pulp Fiction kind of things. I really shouldn’t be laughing at that.

Cool. Thanks for the link. Great site.

And, I don’t know that I’d call myself a righty political blog. More like just a small l libertarian old fashioned New England conservative blog.

Which is basically a flaming liberal south of Richmond, VA.

I’m not Sam Penny either, by the way. He’s a blogger at Raising Kaine – a blog put up to promote VA Gov. Tim Kaine. He’s a gun banner and was upset I called him on it.

But your right, no politics in football.

YOUCH!!! Joe, my condolences, bro… !

Heard on the radio on the sports segment this morning “Raiders fans were up for the season, then came Denvers opening drive.” grumble, grumble, grump, grump. Freaking 41 to freaking 14!!!!! Davis needs to retire.

  • The GTL™

SHEESH — not my best outing in general, Joe — 8-7 (.533). Dayum!!! As for the Raiders, I agree, Davis should step completely out of the picture in Oak-town…
