President Obama (Paraphrased) To House Republicans At Annual Retreat: You’re The “Party Of No!“, So How Can You Go Back And Face Your Constituents By Working With Us To Pass Healthcare Reform And Other Important Issues?

Obama takes Republican GOP Congress House members to task at annual get-together -- no teleprompter needed this time...According to The Politico, House members of the G.O.P. “lured” President Obama into their “snake pit trap” — sans the teleprompter — the president’s “crutch” according to so many cheap shots fired his way by the Republican Party’s apologists -slash- pundits. A great chance to give President Obama a G.O.P.-style “blanket party”, they assumed. Watch him squirm, they assumed. When the president polititely requested the presence of the Media — cameras and microphones alike — the “Party of No!” suppressed their grins and and nodded in unison. “Gotchya!“, they thought to themselves. OOPS

Imagine their shock when the president began citing Republican health care reform proposals, almost knowing the G.O.P.’s stances and suggestions better than anybody else in the room — oh, again — and without that teleprompter so many of them had accused him of needing just to open his mouth and say something intelligent. Imagine their surprise when the president correctly pointed out how a bipartisan solution was almost impossible at this point because they would lose brownie points with both their party and their constituents for even negotiating and voting for the reform the majority of Americans — both “Left” AND “Right” are demanding after a year of their whining about how President Obama is out to ruin America. Run into a can of “whoop-ass”? INDEED. But exactly whom?

This bout goes to the president. The question is: when will the American People finally notch a win?

Considering the ‘we won’t listen to anything you have to say’ tone that he set right off the bat:

President Obama listened to Republican gripes about his stimulus package during a meeting with congressional leaders Friday morning – but he also left no doubt about who’s in charge of these negotiations. “I won,” Obama noted matter-of-factly, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

The exchange arose as top House and Senate Republicans expressed concern to the president about the amount of spending in the package. They also raised red flags about a refundable tax credit that returns money to those who don’t pay income taxes, the sources said.

The Republicans stressed that they want to include more middle class tax cuts in the package, citing their proposal to cut the two lowest tax rates — 15 percent and 10 percent — to ten percent and five percent, rather than issue the refundable credit Obama wants.

At another point in the meeting, sources said Obama told the group: “This is a grave situation facing the country.” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama would hold another economic meeting in the White House Saturday for a “broader group.”

After Friday’s meeting, Democratic and Republican leaders publicly wrangled over the developing stimulus plan.

But perhaps taking a cue from Obama’s “I won” line when Democrats were asked if they were concerned about Republicans blocking the package, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had a swift one-word answer: “No.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the bill was on track for passage by February 16, while Republicans continued to voice their opposition.

with Nancy and Harry echoing that same you and the horse you rode in on attitude, he has a lot of gall saying things like this:

Just because it is my administration that proposes it” shouldn’t mean the GOP automatically opposes it, Obama said.

“It can’t be all or nothing,” he said at another point.

On policy, Obama said he and Republicans could discuss such issues as tort reform, medical malpractice insurance reform and some targeted tax cuts.

“I am committed to working with you on these issues,” Obama said, but he insisted that the GOP proposals had to be based in a realistic approach and not in a political endgame. Some of the GOP health proposals, Obama insisted, weren’t financially possible and shouldn’t be pursued just to win political votes in this, a midterm election year.

Not to mention that the GOP has been trying to meet with him since last April, and he has been telling them to get bent and refusing to meet with them. And I seem to recall the Dems digging in their heels, and opposing, often with threats of filibusters, just about everything that Pres. Bush proposed before Sept. 2001 and after 2002. Especially after the 06 mid-terms.

        @Joe Lovell,

The fact that Obama even stooped down to meet with the supposedly-less-popular-than-poisoness-snakes-but-still-manages-to-spank-Obamas-party-in-three-recent-elections party speaks volumes.

I here over and over that the Republicans agreed on a certain plan but then went back and voted against it. I remember that they never wanted a public option but the senate pushed for it anyway. Then they try to slip in legislation that will pay for abortions which is so controversial that planned parenthood cries fowl when the idea of saving a baby is even mentioned in an ad. So to say that Republicans aren’t playing fair is a reach. I do agree that they could have been more strong about there position and are playing politics. But Obama and the Democrats are too. It is no coincidence that it took this long to have a meeting like this. Oh yes, that’s right now they need the Republicans. Before, well who needs them, before Brown it looked like smooth sailing or should I say smooth trickery. Now hopefully both parties can humble themselves and get something done that is truly good for the country without destroying it.

        @Doomed, That’s right Doomed.

Paybacks are hell, aren’t they Dems?

And don’t expect me to pay for your damn health insurance and abortions.

    • Doomed

As for what I hear. The GOP offered amendment after amendment……They were rejected.

They were not even allowed to be in meetings that worked on the legislation. With the exception of the group of 6 who ACTUALLY DID WORK OUT A HEALTHCARE BILL……in the senate……the GOP was effectively forced into saying NO because the democrats were introducing and passing everything that the AMERICAN public says they did not want.

Latest poll….IN favor of the Democratically controlled and passed Obamacare..

Add it up, and 69 percent say Congress should either write a new bill or stop working on health care altogether. (When CNN asked only about the existing bills, 58 percent said they oppose the bills, while 38 percent say they support them.

Who really is the party of no? The democrats are the party of no by saying to the American people…..NO…we know whats best for you….no you cant have your way……no stop bitching….no…no….no.

Latest democratic poll…has 2x more people in the USA saying they are conservative vs. saying they are liberal.

Fox news is trusted by 49 percent of the people sampled (by a democratic organization)
      Cnn..33 percent.
      ABC…32 percent
      NBC…31 percent
      CBS…30 percent
      MSNBC…26 percent.

Glenn Beck is the second most popular figure on television. Bill O is the 10th.

      • Rich Zee

Very strong argument to support not viewing television news and a testament to the veracity (lack of) of the people that rely on information from those programs.

    • Taylor Siluwé

Glen Beck the 2nd most popular figure on television??!! That factoid alone make me weep for this country.

      • F&B

@Taylor Siluwé, Second to Oprah. It is definitely time to weep for this country.

At least Oprah is going to retire soon. I guess then Beck will be #1.

Happy Days are here again. :-D

And in 2010 we’ll start removing the democrat stranglehold on this country. And in 2012, we’ll remove Obama from his FAILED ‘presidency’ and elect someone with some common sense who actually cares about this country and her people.

        • Taylor Siluwé

@F&B, I’ll take the Dem “stranglehold” [LMAO - I'm never sure if you intentionally amuse or not] ball-less though it may sometimes seem, over the Republican and right controlling anything, any day.

Good to see you’re still a hoot. Missed ya!!

          • F&B

@Taylor Siluwé, Seriously dude, I checked out your site a while back, you gotta admit you’re much farther left than mainstream. My comment to you was tongue-in-cheek, just because I was directing it at you, but I do believe (most of) what I say. Don’t be such a stranger. GTL needs more support from the left ;-)

            • Taylor Siluwé

              @F&B,

Yes, I lean sharply left, but I haven’t fallen over yet; I think it gives me a cool swagger. Plus, I abhor mainstream anything (that’s where all the fat, thoughtless lemmings are). ;-)

    • Jones Scott

Its interesting hearing things like this, it’s harder getting the insight details of an American liberal’s perspective; as the right side seems to dominate the airways flowing over Europe.

      • Doomed

@Jones Scott, America is still center right. America is still more likely to be conservative then liberal.

Unfortunately the GTL has lost its libertarian way….by GTL, I mean the website, and instead of being libertarian who happens to be liberal we now seem to be getting a flood of Liberal bias from a guy who happens to be a libertarian.

I vastly preferred the GTL of a couple years ago. It was so much more fun when he could bash the Bush Administration. Now that his side is in power he has to try:

        1. Either defend the indefensible….this is why its good to claim your a libertarian….no one tries your policies to say your right or wrong so you can ALWAYS be right.

        2. Dodge, defelct and pass over the latest craziness of the Progressive LOONS running the Asylum in favor of shining the spotlight on the Rights version of LOONS who ARE NOT RUNNING ANYTHING.

        3. Blame Rush Limbaugh for everything and if that doesnt work then blame GLENN BECK. Funny thing about Glenn Beck. He was beloved by the left just a few short years ago when he was Bush Bashing with the best of them. His downfall? He joinned Fox news. But he is still a libertarian who just happens to be a conservative libertarian and not the RARE and OBSCURE LIBERAL libertarian that occasionally pops up from time to time in America.

So why is FOX so popular.

        1. Conservatives are sober enough to watch TV. Liberals are usually drunk, stoned or out burning down their own neighborhoods protesting their own poverty.

        2. Conservatives work and have a job so they can afford cable or sattellite. Democrats work but they would rather buy booze, drugs and have sex with strangers. Conservatives on the other hand can afford to do both.

        3. Fox news has a whole host of hot blond bombshells doing their shows. Liberal programs have Rhoades Scholars who are well…..rather average.

        4. Fox news Highlights ex blond Ms. Americas……..Liberal shows highlight Keith Olberman. Do the math..in a world where the liberals are obsessed with sex……why are they watching KEITH OLBERMAN….well the polls say they ARENT.

Oblabby lies right in your face, we know that clearly, Harkins lips were moving so we know what that means. My fight is with the stupid repubs and their glory hole preformance for Oblabby last week. Where is the brith certificate? When did the Federal reserve chairman get the right to seal doucs and claim excutive privilige on AIG bailout? The real deal is they all realize they are in trouble and somebody better coop and make it seem nice with those crazy tea party folks before they “debag” all of us pols. If the repubs really wanted to clean the mess up they would just start exposing corruption everywhere! Last year Oblabby stood in front of us and said $500B was being wasted in Fraud and abuse in Medicare and medicade…no one has gotten fired yet? Is that just the way budgets work?
