True “Maverick” Republican, Colin Powell: Enough With The Misleading Campaign Ads — I’m Voting For Barry Obama

October 19th, 2008 · 74 Comments · Iraq, National Politics, Politics, Presidency 2008, Terrorism

And That’s Not All The Former GOP Four-Star General Said Either…

Panama John endures huge disappointment as Colin Powell steps out to endorse Barack Obama and Joe Biden over McCain and Sarah Palin...Señor “Panama Juan” Sidney McCain has just been stabbed in the back (Source: CNN) by a long-time “friend” of twenty-plus years, dating back to when “The Maverick” was still in his early-seventies; a so-called “friend” by the name of General Colin Powell. That’s right, folks — the “rumors” have been brought to an end — General Powell has blatantly jumped ship in an attempt to “out-maverick Republican” his OLD buddy, Panama Juan, by clearly endorsing the guy who has been “pallin’ around with terr’ists” (according to Sarah Barracuda Palin), Barry Obama, for the presidency. OUCH. That one’s gonna leave a scar.

Question, does this endorsement now make General Powell the “Maverick Republican” equivalent of “Maverick Liberal”, Joseph “the world revolves me” Lieberman? To seek the answer, I decided to read through the comments of some fairly prominent Republican bloggers (just “snips” — please read the entire posts to get the whole picture)…

  • From Michelle Malkin:

“… Judgment, schmudgment, eh, Secretary Powell? …”

  • Pajamas Media’s Jules Crittenden:

“… There are the people who slam him for carrying Bush’s water. He lied, people died. Then there the people who slam him for lying about carrying Bush’s water and betraying the administration he was serving. …”

  • Lorie Byrd of WizBang:

“… I wonder if all those lefty bloggers who have referred to Colin Powell as an Uncle Tom for all these years will call him that anymore. Probably not. …”

  • David Weigel of Reason:

“… The Powell endorsement shouldn’t be all good for Obama. Powell’s tenure at State was, in retrospect, a disaster. …”

  • Captain Ed Morrissey of Hot Air:

“… I think Joe the Plumber has more resonance than Colin Powell at this point in the election. …”

  • Yep, it appears ole’ “Jumpin’ Joe” and “Jumpin’ Colin” have become members of the ole’ “we don’t like him anymore” club by their former colleagues — a sometimes lonely, sometimes “rock star” position depending upon what these two [real] “mavericks” say at any given time on any given issue. The major difference? Jumpin’ Joe still holds a position of authority as a lawmaker who continues to send our kids into the meatgrinders of the Middle East fight the terr’ists over in Iraq so we don’t have to fight them in Wasilla, Alaska, while Secretary Powell doesn’t hold a position of authority in any of the three separate but equal three branches of government, in order of authority — 1. The Executive, 2. The Legislative, or 3. The Judicial branches — yet.

On the other hand, would anybody be surprised if Jumpin’ Colin is appointed to a secretarial position in the event the Señor McCain Paŕa Èl Presidenté Camp is defeated by the Obama-Obiden Camp in their race for the Oval Office? Not MOI (and yawwwn, again — yes, I AM part French)…

If so, let us just pray he doesn’t start swishing water bottles at the UN World Headquarters again.

    ***

Other blogger reax (again, just “snips” — read the entire article) from those other sides of the Blogospheres (H/T to MemeOrandum)…

  • Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Dish:

“… Powell is really taking a stand in defense of decent, inclusive, moderate Republicanism. It’s amazing it has taken Powell to say this publicly, to stand up against the Rove machine and say enough. But it is welcome nonetheless. One more thing: Powell’s endorsement of Obama is privately echoed by many moderate Republicans across the country and in Washington. …”

  • Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic:

“… Powell is a “man who I admire as much as anyone in the world,” McCain has said. He was an informal adviser to the campaign early on. And the content of the endorsement acknowledges what McCain’s accomplished, studies it, and judges that it is insufficient for the modern world. …”

  • Tony Campbell of The Moderate Voice:

“… Powell said several times that a generational change was needed. However, it is not simply defined by the age difference between the two candidates. The difference is how John McCain and Barack Obama view the world. McCain sees the world as a continuation of the “us v. them” type of foreign policy. The only change is the substitution of Terrorists for Communists. Instead of seeing enemies, Obama sees opportunity to dialogue with these nations to find common areas of understanding and cooperation. …”

  • Alex Koppelman of Salons “The War Room”:

“… Powell came off as thoughtful and serious and he made his views absolutely clear. He was disappointed with John McCain’s response to the financial crisis, unhappy with the choice of Sarah Palin as a vice-presidential nominee and uncomfortable with the direction that the Republican Party is headed. …”

  • Ron Beasley of The Newshoggers:

“… Now not all or even most of the Palin/McCain lunatics are going to resort to violence – but it only take a few of them as was demonstrated years ago in Oklahoma City. And we can expect that the Secret Service is going to be very busy trying to keep Barack Obama alive the next few years.”

  • Glenn Greenwald of Salon:

“… Powell bears much of the responsibility, and always will, for the horrific U.S. attack on Iraq (one which, just by the way, resulted in the deaths of at least hundreds of thousands of innocent Muslims), but he deserves credit for using the platform he had this morning to go out of his way to make this vital point when doing so was not necessary (and perhaps not even helpful) in advancing the cause of his endorsement of Obama. …”

  • Demozel of Buck Naked Politics:

“… I have always been inclined to forgive and move on. Why? I don’t know. I’ve always liked Powell; and again, why? I don’t know. A lot of people seem to feel that he’s atoned in some way….cf. Oliver Stone’s in many respects disappointing film W, which makes Powell out to be a good man who—reluctantly! doubtingly! uneasily!— bought into a bad idea foisted on him by his old partner-in-war Dick Cheney. I believe that; but why? …”

  • Oliver Willis:

“… I’ve still got lots of problems with Gen. Powell’s role in the Iraq war, but he’s a widely admired figure in U.S. politics.”

  • Logan Murphy of Crooks and Liars:

“… Powell’s endorsement will have little effect on Democrats, but he is an icon of the Republican Party — which is where the true impact of this endorsement lies.”

  • skippy the bush kangaroo:

    “… good for you general.”

  • Alex Knapp of Outside The Beltway:

“… this hurts McCain and helps Obama–in that order–in the sense that this endorsement will likely dominate the next 36 hours of news coverage. …”

  • And some other “must-reads”: Tim F. of Balloon Juice; Drudge Retort; Steve Soto of The Left Coaster; The Heretik; Tas of Comments From Left Field; Stop The ACLU (another perspective from the Right); Maha of The Mahablog

GOD THE DEVIL AS THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES…

Following the US elections lately has got me thinking… about an interesting perspective. OK guys, allow me to use the hypothesis of a being who is running for President of the United States of America!

First, would HE get nominated for the democratic party ticket?

Let’s see about that: He has a writ-large non-negotiable agenda to wipe out homosexuals, palm readers, psychiatrists, Hollywood, Premarital sex, Philosophers, Office Quickies, One nights, The tobacco Industry, The alcoholic Industry and the like.

Second he will entrench a global socialist economy and establish a dictatorship around the globe where his word is Law!!!

He has been quoted recently by sections of the Right Press as having a record of killing children as young as 3 years for no crime of their own except for being born to a certain ethnicity.

He is a war veteran who has been quoted as having bragged about bombing entire cities with biochemical weaponry because of their independent thought, Lavish Hollywood lifestyles and “extreme press freedoms”.

His record on ethnic cleansing and the obliteration of entire tribes to the advantage and advancement of his own, makes Adolf’s handiwork look like a 12 year old armature painter daring Picasso.

He has massacred an entire race in the middle east and Asia and murdered a president because of being gender sensitive, believing in Animal rights and saving some children.

You dare not mention his deranged escapades in Africa, especially in Egypt, where he has crippled an entire economy, assassinated children from 1month old and caused the pollution of the Nile.

Come to think about his leadership style? He has a selected elite group of followers whose oath includes the George W. Bush’s war code of “Shoot first ask questions later”.

Now, what is his tax record? Everybody pays a general tax of 10% whether you are big business making trillions like Microsoft or street boy eking out a living.

He has no accounting and reporting mechanism. He does not encourage the reading of budgets or parliamentary accountability.

The only legislation he has passed for six thousand years of global leadership has been the 10 DONT’S. HIS qualification is he been there, seen that, done that!

To his credit he will offer free health care to simple folks; This is made possible by the fact that blood is the cure.

There are other additions; he can protect you, and prosper you on condition that you contribute a substance to his campaign.

If you don’t do as he says he runs a shit-hole that makes Guantanamo-bay look like a Cyprus Beach resort. There he will chain you without the luxurious advantage of reading your rights except the right to remain silent.

Oh, and in case you fight long enough for a fair trial, he gets to appoint the judge (himself) the Jury (himself) and the Prison warder (a role currently delegated to some bastard but which he will take with relish after the bastard losses control of the electorate)

Whats more guys? He will hear none of your whining about the current crisis economy or democracy or freedom. NAY. if you complain he will send you Genetically modified snakes, pests, frogs in throngs or worse,or he will use nucleus reactors to bury you alive!

Like Bush, he is not negotiating with a terrorist! Anyone and i mean Anyone , who dares question His constitution, which He self-authored without consulting anybody, is a terrorist!!

He has dedicated entire resources to wiping out an entire tribe from the humanity and even increased his military firepower to wipe out more. His war misadventures in the Mediterranean shames Ahmedinajad’s declarations against Israel. The poor Iranian president thought he has won golden Medal for his intentions but our guy beat him to it.

OK sounds like a bad guy is running for president here?

if you haven’t noticed dummy, i am talking about GOD in bible terms!!!

    • Lorie Byrd

You didn’t quote the part of my post where I asked if the media would treat them the same. That is where I think the Lieberman comparison will be most striking. Will they make more of the Powell endorsement than they did of the endorsement of the Democrat Vice Presidential nominee from 2000.

I don’t think the “I liked them until they endorsed…” line applies much in this case. Liberals stopped liking Lieberman over the war, way before he endorsed McCain and conservatives have long had problems with Powell, first over abortion and affirmative action, then over his time at the state department, and most recently over the Bob Woodward book. I am a conservative and have heard more criticism of Powell over those matters over the past few years than over this endorsement, which many have expected for months.

    • The GTL™

Lorie, I highly admire your blogging and your great blog; I apologize if you object to the parts of your great post I snipped. I’ve gone back and BOLDED the part where I say:

“just “snips” — please read the entire posts to get the whole picture”

I meant to do that in the first place. Again, my humblest apologies :-)

    • dorothyd

I am ashamed of how McCain is taking the low road, he is trying to make us afraid of Obama, I will vote for Obama and I hope other voters see through all the dirty tricks and lies…. Heaven help us if Obama loses can’t imagine the old guy dieing and having that lady as our President.

    • Millie W.

There would be asolutely no complaint if Mr.Powell would have endorsed John McCain as we all know he (Mr. Powell) was wooed by the McCain party also, so apparently he is still yet very well respected. I believe this was a major blow.

    • jeab

True Maverick, Powell? Whatever…Col. Powell can endorse whoever he wants, but we need to believe in what we see, hear and I think J.Mccain established trust and the way to fix the country and he is the most inspired candidate.
The positive attitude he had to survive the vietnam war.

It is not time to make a history, for a black man, it is time to pick the right one for the best improvement in economy for our country.

    • Targaray

Why do republicans respond with such anger, intolerance and dismissiveness instead of defending the failed Bush policies that McCain wants to continue.

    • jbfalaska

As a former military member, watching the absolute disregard for diplomacy done by the Bush Administration, thwarting Colin Powell at every turn, no wonder. This should be an easy endorsement for many more former officers to join with Colin Powell. After all, it is the men and women in their charge they must convince of the nobility of their work and contribution.

Hate him now, but Secretary Powell did the right thing for all in the military.

    • Richard

As a white male Republican from Arizona who makes 250,000+ annually and was in the military, I went into this election year with an absolute open mind to every canidate. Even when it came down to the final choices, Obama and McCain I stayed open minded and totally undecided as I feel that most intellegent people should do regardless of party lines until they know what each canidate is all about. As the campaign went on I slowly started to feel ashamed of my political party and my state senator for so many reasons. McCain’s choice on his running mate Sarah Palin….what?!?. I truely believe he made that decision purely to get the votes of women and those who were supporting Hilary, and he did it at the expense of our nation. Why at the expense of our nation do you ask? Palin is no where near the level of experience that one should have to be our “back-up president”. People seem to forget that she will be next in line to lead our nation if anything were to happen to McCain and that scares the hell out of me. Another thing that I have noticed as I watch the presidential race closely: Obama is talking about the issues that face our country and telling us how he intends to address those issues. McCain on the other hand has put ALOT of effort in what is obviously a “smear” campaign and has not touched on the issues that affect this country nearly as much as Obama, which has me believe that either one: McCain has no clue how to handle these issues or two he doesn’t really plan to do alot of changing in the White House and plans to continue the Bush “legacy”. Now I am not a ignorant or naive person so I am not saying that everything Obama is promising is the truth or will happen but honestly even if half of what he is saying actually comes to reality then we will be in a lot better position than we are now. While McCain on the other hand has not given me a whole lot to hope for. If I were a betting man I would say the “odds” of change for the better lie with Obama. I can go on and on about the reasons that have swayed me away from my own political party and my very on Senator but I am not trying to run a “smear campaign” here. I am simply voicing my opinions as someone who is not black, who does make over 250,000+ annually, who was in the Military, who is Republican, who is from Arizona and who might be the perfect sterotypical view of someone who would or should be voting for McCain but I am not. I am voting for OBAMA!

    • Derek

For the first time in over 20 years I will not be voting. I have watch MSNBC, CNN, FOX and others to get a broad perspective on the candidates. McCain doesn’t have a clear direction of this country’s economic crisis. Obama just plain scares me and will lead us into a Socialist society (like Russia). In the end. it is WE that are the losers in this election.

    • YO

I’m Texan and Obama is my homeboy! Vote Monday y’all early elections, YEEEEHAAAAAH!!!

    • Pensive Cerebrum

The Republican reaction to General Powell’s endorsement of Senator Obama on many websites today has been nothing short of disgusting. A huge majority of their posts are accusing General Powell of endorsing Senator Obama only because they are both Black. Never mind that Senator Obama is actually a half-white half-breed. Rush Limbaugh also sent out a mass e-mail putting forth this idea so now, suddenly, Republicans are going to act like General Powell was never one of their own leaders.

How is it that none of those people ever stopped to think that General Powell was endorsing Senator Obama to get revenge on President Bush, Senator McCain, and the Republican Party for deceptively using him to help start an unjust and immoral war for oil in a country that, depite its horrible leader, had nothing to do with 9/11? General Powell never cared about race before and has no reason to start now. Revenge is a much stronger motive than race. People need to think more.

    • George

Is it any real surprise that “flip-flop” Powell would endorse “O”. He is just trying to secure himself a cabinet post or some other “favorable position” if “O” wins. Powell sucked in his previous positions, as a general and also as the Secretary of State so his endorsement of “O” is no surprise and does nothing but give the one-sided press some more drivel to write about to fill their blogs, papers, whatever. As noted above, the real losers in this presidential election will be the citizens of this once fine nation, which now belongs to OPEC, India, China and so many other country due to the poor runnig of our government since the mid-70s and beyond.

    • peter kumaga

Collin Powell’s endorsement of Barrack Obama is insignificant, because this guy stood in front of the whole world and lied.what credibility has he have? Instead of him hiding somewhere thinking of what his lies cause this nation he is out there endorsing,he should be ashamed of himself.

    • Anderson

Wake up American, the world will be ended, America will no longer a millitary, econimic, super power country in the world IF BARRACK OBAMA Elected

    • Johivin

I am an independent. Pure and simple. Both parties are absolutely disgusting and neither one are worthy of my vote. Yet I have been truly sickened by the McCain’s continued personal attacks on Obama. Obama may have spent more on negative ads, however, a larger percentage of McCain’s ads have been negative. I have not seen a single ad of McCain’s in NJ that has been positive. No even a 1/2 and 1/2 situation where he concludes with his own plans. It has been simply personal attacks. Fearmongering.
Obama’s ads in NJ have been more of the 1/2 and 1/2 situation that we have become used to in politics. Oh, let me tell you how bad my opponent is and then tell you what I can do that is different. Annoying, but expected as it is the new ‘tradition’ in politics.
Powell IS a respected member of the United States. Many times he has shown his honor, though he has had his own moments of dishonor. Yet I would still value his opinion then all the Obamas, McCains, Clintons, and Bushs of the world.
The fanatical members of the parties are the truly disturbing individuals. The recent yelling of “Kill him” and “Cut off his head” are proof of such. Sometimes your candidate makes mistakes, admit them.
George W. Bush lied repeatedly about our knowledge of the location of WMDs in Iraq. Yet there are many who will defend that he didn’t lie. He did.
Bill Clinton lied repeatedly about having an extramarital affair. Many have defended his actions. He did and it’s not justified.

The leader that is chosen should be a person of honor. Who takes responsibility for their actions and is willing to solve the problems of the nation.

      Final points-
      1) Meeting with someone “Without conditions” means sitting with someone and holding a discussion about a topic. A meeting “With conditions” is essentially, “Do what I say and then I’ll talk to you”. By speaking to someone “without conditions” you do not justify their cause, you are attempting to find a way to solve the problem between the two parties. Isn’t that what we expect from ourselves? Or would you prefer for someone to say “You have to give me your car before I’ll talk to you about why I’m upset with you”.

      2) Joe the Plumber was a fool to get involved in the national spotlight. The fact that he does not hold a plumbing license and owes money in taxes is going to sic the IRS on him. If you owe the government money, don’t talk to political candidates.

    • radman

powell’s support to obama is nothing.

mcain’s ads on obama is not racist!

mccain’s ads on obama’s relationship with ayers and acorn is very important for americans to understand. his “spread the wealth” economic principle, his attacks against “joe the plumber”, his belied commitment as to how much they will accept and spend for the elections… very alarming! is he not a liar?

america’s economy is falling as obama is leading against mccain!

    • radman

powell is just sourgraping as mccain picked palin over powell.

    • misterlucky

Powell the Maverick, huh….that’s the lay term. We professionals know it as bipolar, or pyschoses. I don’t know what Powell’s wife calls it, but, as she stated in the old commercial, she makes sure he takes his meds for it.
Those were some buckwild days he spent with Reagan, though: gunrunning and carpetbagging in the mideast, making damn fools of the sectarian muslim factions, fighting each other in the Iran/Iraq war; selling both sides weapons of self-destruction, manufactured by none other than their sworn enemy, the Isrealis….lol..HOO DOY!! when that finally hit them, tee hee..in 2001..ho ho, on sept 11,….

    • Raven

I am Voting for Obama WAKE UP Peaple we were doing good before Bush got in office and look where we are now. that is because of the Republicans. Mcain agrees with Bush on the war we were led into because of lies. Bush can’t even admit he was totally wrong and they are making money off the oil that is the only reason why we are there now. I feel sorry for the Military over there now. If the US has any chance of turning around we NEED Obama in there. Our whole Economy will crash if Mcain gets in. If anyone watches the debates and looks at the websites and have opened thier eyes in the last 4 years this should be the easiest Election ever. OBAMA for President.

    • radman

lots of americans are like “joe the plumber”, will they be treated by obama, his party and his supporters for asking? is that the kind of person americans want as president, attacking middle americans after having the guts to asked while at the same time campaigning to help them? such a liar!

    • Jeremiah

I just wanted to say that I am proud of Colin Powell for endorsing someone outside of his party. I think too many times we feel like we have to defend the people and ideals of the party even if they are clearly wrong, divisive and even in this case, potentially dangerous. If nothing else, it is refreshing to see someone to give both candidates equal consideration and then to make their decision.

I also want to raise a point about identity politics. I am a white male in a very small town in Alabama. In every presidential election I have voted for, I have voted Republican. I say that, though I have never really been affiliated with either party. Before, honestly, I got my information from my peers, who in Alabama seem to be more likely Republican. So it seems to me, watching the polls, that people are expected to vote within whatever group with which they identify with. White working class voters tend to go for Hillary, evangelicals for McCain, Youth for Obama. I think what is really missing here is the idea that our vote does not only reflect our own ideals, but the ideals that will effect every American. I think there is a real cohesion missing from our country. I might make more than 250,000 per year, so do all policies need to be in place to benefit me? I may believe in God, but do all Americans believe? I may never want an abortion, but is that right something many women hold sacred? Seeing Sec. Powell speak about the decision behind his endorsement for Barack Obama was exactly what I am talking about. His friend of over 25 years, or the good of the American people. Thank you Mr Powell, you are a true public servant.

    • radman

with obama as president, america will be reduced to nothing! this is what america’s domestic and the world’s terrorists wanted. and their allies? the americans! congratulations!

    • radman

with obama as president, america will be reduced to nothing! this is what america’s domestic and the world’s terrorists wanted. and their allies? americans! congratulations!

    • Political Party

This is for the Republicans and Democrats who are spewing hate and division in this country. Neither, the Demorcats or Repulicans want your vote and especially do not wnat you in their respective parties. Just once, can people join together and support whoever wins this election.

    • Julie Q

My only question is if Powell came out and decided to endorse McCain would Republicans and McCain supporters be saying the same negative things about him and belittle his decision like they are right now? I think not! No, if he came out and endorsed McCain instead of Obama then McCain supporters would be praising him and talking about what a true american hero he is and all the positive things he has done etc, etc.. Don’t pretend and try to convince yourself otherwise because you know damn well it’s true. Seriously, so what if Powell is voting for Obama, that’s his right to vote for anyone he chooses regardless of party affiliation and if it does get a few more undecided people to vote for Obama too…well, get over it they have that right to listen to and vote for whoever they choose also. Seriously people, we need to stop dividing the country with childish bickering. I am tired of people complaining about who endorses who, and who is going to vote for who. Everyone in this country has the right to endorse and vote for whoever they like just as you have the right to leave if you don’t like whoever is voted into office. I hear Mexico has some nice beach front property available….by the way I am not an Obama supporter nor am I a McCain supporter, I am republican and I am still undecided on who I will vote for.

    • Sweet Revenge

I agree with the above poster. Powell endorsed Obama to get revenge on Bush, McCain, and all the other Republicans who tricked him into lying to the UN to force their evil war plans upon the world. It has nothing to do with race. Revenge is a female pitbull.

    • Matthew Ochieng Kowili

America is a country of great people,Collin Powell among many.Powell has done the right thing,America needs Barrack Obama as President, infact not just America,THE WORLD.

To endorse Obama a Democrat when Powell himself is Republican shows Powell is seeing beyond the party and thatv whats Americans need to do at this time of crisis.

      Matthew.

    • Kirk

I admire and commend Gen. Powell for speaking against the vile and hateful comments that have largely gone unadmonished at the McCain-Palin rallies (which have more resembled angry mobs). The recent statements made by Gov. Palin (rural towns that she defines as “more pro-American), Nancy Pfotenhauer (southern/more rural Virginia, to her is “real Virginia”), and Michelle Bachmann (R-Minnesota, referring to non-McCain/Palin backers as “anti-American) are insulting, divisive, and ludicrous seeds of garbage that have no place in this election or our country, for that matter. These women need to be held accountable…bottom line.

    • bongsiysi

I’m not american. just an interested observer: emotion, temper, affiliations, … are getting in the way. a large number of americans simply are not reflecting, weighing issues as they should be doing for their own good. they simply vote against their own interests. ignorantly! how sad. very few of us on earth have this chance u have.

i come from a country where a dictator who’s been in office since 1982! simply appoints election-running officials who make sure that our votes don’t really count, just a formality.

america! use ur heads, u’ve got >300 mln of them (not all votind though). the power is in ur hand. BUT ONLY IF u use ur heads. it’s enough if each one of u voting cd (especially to himself/herself) list a few objective reasons why his/her vote goes to… and not to…
      God bless u.

    • misterlucky

I’d like to remind people like Sweet Revenge, that no one in politics, and no one in the upper echelons of politics, is as naive and stupid enough to ” get tricked into lying”, to the UN or anyone else. No more than Bush got tricked into believing what Rice told him about Saddam Hussein’s weapons caches. As Dan Rather pointed out in his televised interview with Saddam Hussein…OK;now tell me there was no such interview..the furnace that was being shipped to Husseins’ country, that was made to make alloy metals, for weapons of mass destruction, that furnace was sold to Hussein by the US dept of Commerce, so said the invoice Dan Rather held in his hands, with the camera focused on it, in the cargo hold of a ship, sailing for Iraq. That was shown BEFORE the famed interview.
Before the famed trickery and betrayal of the honorable Colin Powell, where the poor, beleaguered and under-medicated, bipolar starred general and head of state cabinet member was “set up” to face the UN with lies and cunning, this same simple man of duty and honor, years earlier, under Reagan, was the very catalyst that set this whole sick scene in motion.
It was Colin Powell, then still a ranking general, who acted covertly under Reagan, to sell arms to the fighting factions in the Iran/Irag War, that was raging at that time. As you remember, this is the same arms deal that blew up before it got cleaned up, and Ollie North, another feckless soldier, took the fall for it. Powell did the wheeling and dealing, then went to Germany to hide out and cool off.
It was events like this that directly instigated 9/11: considering the fact that both sides soon find out the fools they were being made out as. They were buying weapons of great quality and at a disount to boot; but they soon after realized that the U.S. was playing an insult and injury game: they were intending to sell weapons to the muslim factions, in the hopes that they would destroy each other. And Powell saw to it that they would destroy each other with weapons manufactured by their enemies.
9/11 was just a matter of time. Colin Powell was rightly used by Bush to go straigthen up the mess he started, and no one, but no one is to blame for any or all of this but the cabinet members and intelligence personnel, like Condoleeza Rice, who provided the executive with the information to back his actions. That’s what the job is.
Rice and Powell came to Bush with the war stories, and Bush wisely used them both to facilitate the resolution.
Powell, by the way, has long been suffering from what used to be known as schizophrenia, now popularly known as bipolar.
I don’t care if he supports his genitals with a helmet.

    • misterlucky

Friend, or not, of McCain or Obama; i don’t believe that someone like Colin Powell, who we conveniently forget is as guilty as Bush in what has happened in the last 8 years…moreso, considering that 9/11 was brought on by something Powell did in the Reagan years;…..I hardly see Powell as knowing what’s good for the country, now or any other time.
Al Queada backs Obama too, you know.

    • Taylor Siluwé

“Al Queada backs Obama too, you know.”

Hmmmm… have we been receiving secret missives from Bin Ladin, Misterlucky? Do tell!

    • Ole Blue

It will be interesting how the Powell endorsement will play out since we are so close to the election.

I do not think that it was a surprise on who Powell would endorse, but it was crafty to wait until close to election time.

    • Sweet Revenge

Mister Lucky, nonetheless, the Bush administration threw Powell under the bus when their lies about Iraq got exposed for the scams we now know them to be. Powell endorsing Obama is about getting revenge on the Bush administration for making him the fall guy in their despicable plot.

It has nothing to do with race. My point is why are all the rabid right commentators saying race is the reason Powell endorsed Obama? Powell never liked Jackson or Sharpton. It seems obvious that revenge makes much more sense as an intelligent rationale for Powell to endorse Obama.

    • Fandb

Wow, this is great – it looks like the Obama-bots have come crawling out of the woodwork.

Powell can endorse anyone he wants, we still have that privelege in the U.S.A. It is disappointing to conservatives that he chose the antichrist Obama regardless of his motives. Obviously, he thinks Obama will make a better President than McCain – so he isn’t as intelligent as many of us thought he was. Live and learn, eh.

You don’t need any ‘secret missives’ from bin Laden to know that Al Qaeda supports Obama – they have made their view quite public and well known.

It is interesting that Obama is suddenly making “Vote early” the centerpiece of his campaign. The political winds have been shifting ever since he revealed his Socialist agenda to Joe the Plumber.

Even more curious is the fact that the liberals tend to ignore the fact that the antichrist wrote in the first of his memoirs that “If the political winds shift in an ugly direction, I will stand with the Muslims”

Sounds like he will side with the Muslims against Israel or whomever else might go against them.

(It is also funny how someone who really hasn’t done anything yet could have written two ‘Memoir’ books before the age of 48. Makes it seem more like they are Manifestos than Memoirs.)

Or maybe the antichrist Obama just wants to get as many votes in as he can before the big October surprise GTL has told us is coming???

    • Ole Blue

When people use the word antichrist in a serious manner it makes me giggle. ;-)

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

yes it is funny. The fear of it all…totally scaring the crap outta people…the worst nightmare coming to make a 4 year visit lol

    • Taylor Siluwé

yeah, ‘antichrist’ is the every kooks favorite fear word. ever hear the term crying wolf? when he does show up, you nuts will never know it.

    • Fandb

If you don’t believe that Obama is antichrist, read his books, his “memoirs”.

I don’t think they’re available on YouTube! You might actually have to read.

He is the epitome of secular humanist and his politics are Socialist. He also believes completely that the end justifies the means and he believes it is perfectly OK to lie, cheat, and steal to push forward his secular humanist/socialist agenda. He also understands that the majority of the sheeple will fall for his rhetoric and never actually listen to the meaning behind his statements.

None of the Obama-bots even know what Obama the antichrist’s policies are. They’re just a bunch of brainwashed Bush-haters who like to criticize but are incapable of creating positive ideas.

    • Taylor Siluwé

“Brainwashed Bush-haters”?! Who needs to be brainwashed to hate that fool? LMAO!!!!

I’d have to brainwashed NOT to.

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

Taylor, I hear ya…I’m sure these George Bush haters think George Bush is/was the Anti-Christ and voted for GWB regardless…so funny it’s sad.

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

I meant “George Bush Lovers”…my bad but you get the point. George Bush Lovers trying to convince us that Obama is the anti-christ…sure.

But I feel anyone’s pain, (including Fandb’s), that can’t stand Obama because I can’t stand that DEVIL George Bush. He’s been a PAIN IN THE A*S for the past 8 years.

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

Based on that, I look forward to the Obama years…Bush Lover’s can handle 4 years of Obama…that’s the least that can be done…if not 8 years lol

    • Fandb

The really sad part, so sad it isn’t even funny, is that all the Obama-bots don’t even know what they’re getting themselves into.

Even the Carter debacle of a Presidency will look like a picnic compared to what an Obama administration will do to this country.

As bad as y’all think the Bush administration has been, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. As I have said before, I only hope there is something left to save when all the left-wingers and Obama-bots are done.

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

It’s hard to take advice from Right Wingers that got duped by Bush…not once but twice. Now Right Wingers want to convince left-wingers, GOP Conservatives leaving the GOP base and other groups to not vote for Obama.

      Tough Sell

    • girardia

Yeah, we better be afraid of Obama’s socialist agenda. There’s just no way he can do nearly as good a job as the crack team we’ve had these last eight years.

Sorry F&B, I’ll admit Carter wasn’t all that good but he was infinitely better than this group of miserable thieves. It is truly stunning there is anyone in this country who thinks the Republicans should get another chance. Republicans have been the biggest fu9kups in modern history. The world would be a far better place if these bigoted, corrupt morons all fired their handguns into their mouths a few times.

I agree that Powell’s hands are bloody, but to call this a racist move is racist, but racism is a big part of the republican platform, along with voter suppression and disenfranchisement, elimination of civil rights, subversion of the Constitution, seperation of wealth, elimination of the middle class, political corruption, cronyism, and incopetence, control of the media (that some stupid people think leans left but is a right wing spin machine promoting war).

    • Ole Blue

Also, what makes me giggle is when conservatives mention Carter like he is the Devil.

Seriously, you will probably see Obama, much like Bill Clinton, shift more to the right as President. Most democratic Presidents shift a little to the right due to the US being a conservative country.

    • girardia

When surveys are done asking people if they are conservative, slightly more than half of americans say they are, then, when asked specific questions like whether children deserve medical care or whether gays should be able to visit a dying life-long patner in the hospital it seems that they are actually liberals. I think Clintons shift to the middle was due more to a realization that cooperation with the other side is the only way to get anything done. Fortunately for Obama, but less so for America, the Republicans have screwed up so badly that their brand is worse than tainted dog food, so nearly every one of them trying to get elected this time around will be going home in tears. President Obama will be able to move his agenda through easily, so what movement you do see to the right will not be so much in concilliatory fashion as much as a realization that some of the good ideas and realistic options for solving our problems will come from the right, but not very many, because their basic philosophy is constantly being disproven.

    • Ole Blue

I think it is interesting how people will answer that they are more conservative to generalized questions but when asked more specific questions they tend to be more liberal and seem to side more with civil libertarians.

Hopefully people have learned from the Republicans and will move to a more liberal government. The problem with the Liberal term is people equate it to communism and not to the liberal social governments of Europe that actually have more civil liberties than the US.

Many in the US believe that Europe is almost communist and not an enlightened society that takes care of those who cannot care for themselves yet allows civil liberties to reign.

    • girardia

The business of America is business, and the people of America are all parts of this giant machine. It only makes sense for the brain of the machine, i.e. the government, to coordinate activities so that all the parts are kept in the best shape possible. I’m not even close to satisfied with the job we are doing. I envision, within my lifetime (and I’m turning gray), that our nationalized health care will not only cover everyone, but thatwe will all get lazic if we need it, we will get dental care from birth to death, if we snore we’ll get that fixed, if we need counselling it will be there, literally, if we’re getting to old to reach our toes, a pedicure will be covered. The simple truth is that not taking care of everything we can is costing us far more than cutting everywhere we can. Our system is the most inefficient in the world, and a large number of the bankruptcies contributing to this financial mess are due to medical calamities. That is ridiculous. We are at a point where we need a New Deal. America can and will do this. If you don’t believe in America and don’t think we can do this maybe you should go somewhere else. If your one of the hateful dividers that isn’t thoroughly disgusted and dismayed with the wretched lies of the McShame campaign, then you are the unAmerican. What a piece of s4it this guy has revealed himself to be.

    • girardia

That post wasn’t directed at anyone in particular, by the way, just the hateful types in either party really. Can’t we all just get along?

    • Fandb

I’m thoroughly disgusted and dismayed by the wretched lies of the Obama campaign. Obama has revealed himself to be a piece of s4it.

But I don’t call others un-American, whether they disagree with me or not.

    • Dave B

Fandb: wait till these lemmings get their wish. I lived through it during Jimmy Carter. They pushed him and the democrat controlled House and Senate around like they were rag dolls. The only difference from then is the world is more deadly and unforgiving. I remember 8 hour waits in gas lines for $2.00 worth of gas, inflation through the roof, price freezes, and other things that happen when government officials think government is the answer to everything. We’re still suffering from Carter in the Middle East and the most recent economic collapse can be traced directly back to Carter when he made the decision to interject government into the economy and capitalism. I remember feeling vulnerable to attack because Carter was absolutely ball less and treated other countries like they were “people”. He reduced the military to be “nice.” What a dope he was and I am seeing the “perfect storm” all over again. All this pain and misery occurred during the Carter administration. That was only 4 YEARS!

    • Taylor Siluwé

      Dave…
… you should’ve got a job with the McCain campaign. Because that ‘nightmare’ you painted was kind of effective, much more than a Neiman Marcus wearin’, moose-wrestlin’, baby totin’ Hockey Mom from Hell … oops, I mean Alaska.

    • girardia

I’m only slightly disappointed with the old fashioned misrepresentations, distortions, and ommissions of the Obama campaign as opposed the ridiculous and obviously desperate, negative, and outright lies of the McLiar campaign, but once again, I’m with you F&B, the only un-Americans are the ones who are out there calling people un-American, unless I’m un-American for saying that.

I’ve enjoyed disagreeing with you in truly American fashion throughout this campaign. GO AMERICA no matter which of these politicians takes the helm!

    • The GTL™

G (and everybody else in the discussion) — ABSOLUTLEY WELL SAID, Sir! This is, in fact, the reason this is my favorite blog to read — not because I’m the featured article writer but because of all of you who blog here with me. There is NO BETTER place on the Net to find (mostly) civil disagreement than right here, and again — that’s a huge tip of the hat to those who co-blog in the comments sections here…

Puh-LEEZ keep up the great commentary, folks. Without you, this is an empty blog :-)

    • Fandb

Dave B – you bring up an important point that has often been buried in the political tit for tat. The four most important things that led to the current economic crisis:

      1) The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) initiated under Carter.

      2) The CRA as modified with pork and goodies under Clinton.

      3) Franklin Raines.

      4) Barney Frank.

I’m afraid Obama will equal Carter x 10. In my area under Carter we had 25% Unemployment, 12% Mortgages, 11+% Inflation.

    • girardia

The repeal of the Glass-Steagal Act(spelling?) and other foolish deregulation spurred on by greedy GOP’s, with complicit behavior from willing greedy Dems of course, had nothing to do with this crisis. Waging an endless ten billion dollar a week war for no real reason other than oil profits and unpatriotic war profiteering had nothing to do with it. Tax breaks for corporations that ship jobs overseas had nothing to do with it. Failure to encourage US automakers to produce fuel efficient vehicles instead of Hummers had nothing to do with it. An economy based increasingly on consumer consumption had nothing to do with it. Bankruptcies and mortgage failures due to medical catastrophes because we don’t have socialized medicine like all the other modern countries do had nothing to do with it. A declining level of education in an increasingly complex world had nothing to do with it. Deregulation of the credit card industry had nothing to do with it.

This financial collapse is the end result of what have been primarily Republican decisions, aided and abetted by equally stupid, greedy Democrats. They didn’t work. It’s obviously time for change, and you can’t put lipstick on a pig or a pitbull and try and sell us the same tainted dog food. The GOP stinks and it’s got to go.

I will admit that the GOP has been hijacked by crooks, and their policies have been anything but conservative. They need to take a good look at Ron Paul.

    • TjL

Note that there was a clear message from Al Qaeda today that they hope McCain gets elected so that he will continue the “draining” policies of George W. Bush.

So while the McCain folks have been trying to paint Obama as the Al Qaeda candidate, turns out that it’s McCain.

Look for a new message from the McCain camp that you really can’t believe what Al Qaeda says…now that they’re saying it about their guy.

Also, I have no doubt that Jesus could never be elected president of the USA. The Republicans would be up in arms about his “socialism”.

Go read the first chapters of the Book of the Acts of the Apostles and see how they lived. Here’s a quick summary: they lived together in communes and pooled their money so no one would be without.

Obama’s been skewered for saying that the rich ought to pay a little more to help the poor.

      What chance would Jesus have?

Oh, and look for the video of McCain in 2000 or 2004 talking at Michigan State to a student who thought it was socialist that her father, after going to school for 13 years to be a doctor, paid higher taxes.

McCain’s answer was “It’s not socialist.”

Look it up. His own words. Before he lost his way in an attempt to get elected.

He also said that the American people know that when you go negative it means you’ve run out of ideas. Also from 2000.

He said in April? of this year that negative ads “might” help the poll numbers, but is that what we want?

Well, he changed his tune on that too.

So enjoy your fear mongering. I’m not sure if Obama will be up for un-doing the mess that Reaganomics and 8 years of failed leadership from the White House, but I sure know that McCain isn’t. He might have been, if his 2000-persona had survived.

      Sadly, that John McCain died.

And before you bring up McCain’s character and heroism, read the Rolling Stone article on how Mr Maverick ended up as a POW. Hint: it was his own hubris and arrogance.

    • Fandb

Looks like TjL’s comments were photocopied from the DNC talking points memo ;-)

It still cracks me up that the lefties still haven’t presented reasons for why they think Obama should be elected and/or why he would be a good POTUS, they only have negative things to say about the other candidates. What was the comment… Oh yeah, going negative means you have no ideas… or something like that.

    • Fandb

Also, almost forgot, the message was posted on an Al Qaeda web site but was written by an individual who is known to NOT be a member of Al Qaeda. He is an Al Qaeda sympathizer, obviously, but has no connections to the strategic or planning functions within Al Qaeda, and would not be privy to their plans, etc.

    • Taylor Siluwé

The Rolling Stone article ‘Make-Believe Maverick’ was an eye opener — not that I ever believed he was a hero in the first place.

McCain has turned into a sad figure. He looked like one in his interview with Brian Williams, a sad soulless old man who’ll do absolutely anything to be president: including propping up an empty evangelical barbie to literally arouse the base, appeal to the lowest of our society to turn on each other along lines of race and class while pretending to above it.

It’s all an exhausting dance that if successful will make him an even more hated President than W. And considering how the job notoriously ages all who hold it, well, can President Palin be too far behind? A year? Two?

That WTF scenario would be the Maverick’s great legacy, if we are so horrifically blessed.

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

Oh Taylor, Your talkin about this article I take it:

Fandb…you said “Powell can endorse anyone he wants, we still have that privelege in the U.S.A. It is disappointing to conservatives that he chose the antichrist Obama regardless of his motives. Obviously, he thinks Obama will make a better President than McCain – so he isn’t as intelligent as many of us thought he was. Live and learn, eh.”

So My question to anyone on this blog is this…how inelligent was Colin Powell when he was the US Secretary of State supporting our country in George Bush’s cabinet? Was he supporting Bush based on race? Was Colin Powell considered “not highly” intelligent at that time? If anyone has seen the true devil/anti-christ is in true form i.e George Bush, it’s Colin Powell don’t you think? Does anyone think he’s interested in making the same mistake twice in front of the world to see?

      Bring a shovel.

    • Fandb

Jerry – Like I said, Powell can endorse anyone he wants, I just thought he was more intelligent than to endorse Obama. I don’t pretend to be able to get inside his head to discern his motives.

I don’t think his decision was racially motivated, so I’m not sure why you bring that up.

    • Fandb

So now the lefties want to blame John McCain for his own imprisonment and torture. That is just plain sick.

That’s like blaming a rape victim for being raped.

Did he break both arms and a leg just so it would look better for the cameras?

      Did he torture himself too?

Did he refuse to leave out of turn when the North Vietnamese discovered who his father was just so it would look better in the history books?

Regardless of his politics, John McCain is a true, living, breathing, American Hero.

      He is the real deal.

    • JerrySpringerLivesinGOP

Fandb, those questions are being thrown around in the media…that’s why I brought race up…not you per say.

I haven’t heard anyone blaming JohnMcain for his own imprisonment. The main issue was Colin Powell’s alleged lack of intelligence. John McCain’s record of serving our country in the military can’t be tarnished and shouldn’t be. I think everyone agrees on that lefties, righties, martians etc..

The main point is whether Colin Powell lacks intelligence or not which is the above claim that was stated being stated. Furthermore, many TV shows are claiming race being an issue which makes no sense.

    • Fandb

Jerry – “I haven’t heard anyone blaming JohnMcain for his own imprisonment” . . .

From TjL’s post: “And before you bring up McCain’s character and heroism, read the Rolling Stone article on how Mr Maverick ended up as a POW. Hint: it was his own hubris and arrogance.”

The way I read it, the above statement blames McCain for becoming a POW.

    • girardia

      F&B. Here’s some Obamapropaganda for you…
He was elected to be the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. He then passed over 600 high money law firm offers to work for civil rights practice, working for only $13,000 a year helping inner city Chicago poor folks. He was able to register 150,000 people to vote.

During his eight years in the state senate and two in the federal, he’s been known for his aisle crossing bi-partisan solutions to many problems. In the state senate he sponsored 780 bills, 280 of which were signed into law. One bill added health insurance for 20,000 children in Illinois. He sponsored welfare reform. He supported the earned income tax credit. He was involved in increasing the minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.50 an hour. He sponsored death penalty reform requiring interrogations to be video taped which passed 58-0, and was then signed into law by a governor who first opposed it. He also sponsored a bill probing police profiling.

Obama opposed the catastrophic Iraq war publically, long before the invasion, accurately depicting it as undetermined in length, undetermined in cost, with an undetermined objective. He also predicted civil war. Considering what a complete fustercluck this shameful fiasco has been, that is reason enough to elect him.

In his first year in the federal senate, Obama held 39 town hall meetings throughout Illinois. He sponsored 152 bills and resolutions, and cosponsored 427 more. He worked closely with Republican senator Lugar, one of his mentors who will surely have a post in his administration, to expand and author a program to locate & dismantle stray Russian WMD’s left over from the cold war after the disbanding of the USSR. Obama cosponsored the Secure Orderly Immigration Act with John McCain, which passed 62-36. This bill allows undocumented persons who have been here 5+ years allowed to stay and apply for citizenship, only if they have no criminal record, if they learn English, and if they pay back taxes. More than 2 million undocumented persons who have been in the United States for less than two years would be ordered home. In January of 2007 he cosponsored a major ethics and lobbying reform bill with Russ Feingold which insisted on much tougher measures banning lobbyist gifts, meals, and jet rides, as well as disclosure of earmark & contribution bundling to candidates or committees and rules restricting retiring members of Congress from going into lobbying.

When he toured Kuwait, Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian territories, he told the Palestinian Authority Abbas that the US would never recognize Hamas leaders until they renounced mission to attack Israel. When he toured Africa, he publicly took an AIDS test as example of responsibility. He has continually called for increased fuel efficiency standards of 3% a year. The National Education Association gives him an “A” on their most recent scorecard, and he gets a 100% approval rating from the League of Conservation Voters and Planned Parenthood.

On top of all this, he is a gifted orator. The ability to communicate effectively and to inspire is going to be vitally important during his eight years as President, in order to clean up the mess the bumbling imbecile now residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is leaving us.

    • Fandb

Hey girardia, where did you get that? I’m guessing it was either Obama’s web site, NBC, or the New York Times :-)

    • girardia

Actually, I compiled it myself from several sources, obviously all pro-Obama, but I think it’s pretty accurate. He really has accomplished quite a bit. He’s not just a smooth talking empty suit. On the other hand, I also realize he’s a politician but he is clearly the lesser of two evils. The contast has not been clearer in our lifetimes, nor has it ever been more important.

    • Taylor Siluwé

Hey girardia, as Fandb demonstates, some folk actually enjoy the bliss of their ignorance — how else could they stomach the nightly tirade of brilliance from the likes of Sean (lil ball o’ hate and proud of it) Hannity, and everyone’s favorite big gaseous ball, Limbaugh.
