CONSERVATIVE Andrew Sullivan On Señor J. Sidney McCain Para Él Presidenté: Dishonest; Unfit For Command

John McCain of Panama-Arizona taken to task by Andrew Sullivan over controversial Sarah Palin pick for running mate...Sarah Palin Just The Tip Of The Iceberg Of Sullivan’s Major Rant

As regular readers know, I, The GTL™, is under a self-imposed “Go easy on Sarah and Todd Palin” rule due to the fact I kinda-sorta grew up in Alaska with these two people and aside from our (apparently VAST) political differences, I’m kind of proud of the fact a couple of “kids” from my class of 20-plus students are PROVING the sky is the limit in America from quite a unique perpective only a few people can share. But that doesn’t mean others can’t take their potshots

From Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Disha MAJOR RANT entitled:

McCain’s Integrity

“… And then, because he could see he was going to lose, ten days ago, he threw caution to the wind and with no vetting whatsoever, picked a woman who, by her decision to endure her own eight-month pregnancy of a Down Syndrome child in public, that he was going to reignite the culture war as a last stand against Obama. That’s all that is happening right now: a massive bump in the enthusiasm of the Christianist base. This is pure Rove.

Yes, McCain made a decision that revealed many appalling things about him. In the end, his final concern is not national security. No one who cares about national security would pick as vice-president someone who knows nothing about it as his replacement. No one who cares about this country’s safety would gamble the security of the world on a total unknown because she polled well with the Christianist base. No person who truly believed that the surge was integral to this country’s national security would pick as his veep candidate a woman who, so far as we can tell anything, opposed it at the time.

McCain has demonstrated in the last two months that he does not have the character to be president of the United States. …”

Frankly, I must o-pine. Yes, Sarah Palin is quite the extremist, politically speaking and now we are beginning to see what my “GOP Insider” was talking about last week when he gave permission for me to “tip” our readers to the fact her stances on abortion and abstinence ONLY education were only small scratches on the surface for Palin-Extremism as we would learn this week and next. Turns out he was absolutely correct, as he was when he tipped me off back in May that Sarah Palin was SERIOUSLY on the proverbial “table” for Señor J. Sidney McCain.

What this tells me is she WAS vetted long ago by Señor J. Sidney McCain Para Él Presidenté’s campaign and they were A-Okay with all of the above as well as all, which is yet to be aired on this controversial vice presidential pick of The Gentleman From Arizona Panama. For those who, like Andrew Sullivan (and some other folks I know) believe this is a “telling” and “horrible” veepstakes pick for J. Sid, when taking my own information into account, it REALLY brings his integrity into question. In other words, the man will obviously do ANYTHING to secure power over the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. And folks, I find that a HELLUVALOT more frightening than Panama’s Él Presidenté “wannabe’s” willingness to sacrifice ALL just for that little “Barracuda Bump“. Sarah is the RESULT, not the catalyst — the “symptom” of the larger “disease” called “Juan S. McCain”.

Andrew Sullivan didn’t stop there. Well, actually, he almost did, but there are some “snippets” before his anti-Palin rant I’d like to include in this post but I won’t — read Sullivan’s rant in its entirety. He begins by writing about how he is just now beginning to realize Señor McCain is not the honest, well-meaning individual he thought he was. Sullivan must, due to his busy schedule, missed the Vietnam Vets Against John McCain website, which is understandable for a man who is innundated with television appearance requests and runs one hell of a busy and popular blog on The Atlantic. I’m predicting (no “insider stuff” on this one — just a gut feeling) the VVAJC folks to start their own 527’s any day now, and as far as I’m concerned, Señor J. Sidney has brought this on himself by taking every opportunity he can to tell us what a “war hero” he is. John Kerry brought this on himself and so has J. Sid, should it come to fruition.

We should have seen it coming from day one — this lack of character and integrity. The man comes home from war, finds his wife, Carol McCain to be grossly disfigured, he starts chasing “skirts” and ends up leaving Carol in the dust for the non-disfigured, GREATLY WEALTHY Cindy McCain. He assaults our First Amendment Civil Liberty via McCain-Feingold and calls it “good for America”. He promises (and Andrew Sullivan points out) a “different kind of campaign”; a CLEAN one; SO clean in fact, my “GOP insider” buddy told me he passed the proverbial “hat” to start shooting nasty, down-and-dirty 527 ads because even HE believed Señor J. Sidney was “too kind and decent of a man” to bring up any misleading “dirt” on Barack Obama.

Well, guess what? He’s NOT. Andrew Sullivan is absolutely correct — Señor J. Sidney McCain Para Él Presidenté: unfit for command — dishonest, misleading, a liar and a cheat, power-hungry, mentally incapable of tracking how many mansions he owns at any given time, etc., etc., ETC. The choice is CLEAR to me — anybody but J. Sid…

ANYBODY.

“… Thanks, Andrew, for stating it so succinctly and putting it in proper context. The parts I didn’t agree with I didn’t quote. I don’t think her family situation has any bearing on the real issues, which are her lack of experience and preparedness to be Vice President. …”

“The hits keep coming from the Palin trainwreck, and I think the thing that amazes me the most is the way that the right-wing has simply circled wagons around her. There really is no one on any of the right-wing blogs (other, of course, than Daniel Larison and the folks at Amconmag, who you should be reading every day anyway) trying to put the brakes on this mess. It is all spin, all nonsense, all sheer babble- they really are serious about promoting this wingnut to the #2 spot. …”

Since you consider Obama’s anti-gun stance to be a non-issue due to the recent Supreme court ruling, then Palin’s abotion views should also be a non-issue since that question was decided by SCOTUS long ago.

I’ve never made a secret of the fact I despise Barry’s, Joe’s, and others’ “gun-grabbing” knee-jerk reaction. I’m not sure where you’re getting your information that I consider that to be a “non-issue”? It sure wasn’t from here at The GTL, that’s for sure…

McCain is good at milking the mythology that small town middle America lives on.

You know the myths, John Wayne is a hero not just an actor, brown people are inferior, Palin is a soccer mom, and McCain is a hero by being a POW and not a victim of war.

Now, now. WW is right on this. You have been, at the very least minimizing the Obama gun rights record on the basis of the Heller decision. At least in the comments section.

I’ll take you to task for a different reason. How the hell did Andy Sullivan get to be called a conservative? Did he just give the title to himself? Can I be a Liberal? Okay, I’d make a pretty crappy one, but then I could sneak into the clubhouse and spy on y’all.

Small towns are great. You should try living in one. I have lived in Las Vegas and the smog nearly killed me. I have lived in Dallas and the hustle and bustle nearly killed me. I was 23 or so cars back when an American Airlines jet landed on a car on hiway 114 years ago in route to crashing an killing many. Google it….DFW.

Small towns are quiet, laid back and yet they are not without their crime, drama or problems. They usually have trouble funding projects, fixing the streets and maintaining a cosmopolitan way of life. But they get by. People have problems and the community rallies to their aid.

Big towns tend to step over you on the way to work as you lay on the street dieing. Small towns are conservative because those are the roots of this nation. They are the fiber that makes this country strong. An assault has been launched against these vaules by Barak Obama and his Supporters, no less supported by most of the Democrats for years.

Fly over country is a wonderful place to live. It is a place that helps you when you need help, the lines are small and the compassion is great. Unfortunately we only see life from the big city reporters and we come to think this is America.

It is not. America is live and well and vibrant and prosperous and caring. Its just we never hear about that because we are all too busy worrying about what Detroit or NYC is doing or saying.

      On Sept 4th you wrote:

“Sure, Barack Obama and his buddy Joe Biden are world-famous “gun grabbers” but the Supreme Court has SPOKEN on the topic of the 2nd Amendment and they’re going to KEEP speaking in favor of that particular Civil Liberty of ours as far as I can see down the road.”

I interpreted that statement to indicate you did not think the Obama/Biden gun positions were relevant in this election.

A’ight guys — you got me there :-) However, I have on many occasions criticized Obama for his anti-gun views…

I’m not concerned about her pro-life views either, WW — I share some of them. Partial-birth abortion is MURDER, PERIOD. What does trouble me though is when it all begins to add up — her boss despises the 1st Amendment and even modified it (McCain-Feingold); she thinks the war in Iraq is a mission from God; she’s pro censorship (attempted banning of books at the local library); abstinence ONLY education (???); both she, her boss and Obama all having VERY strange “spiritual advisers”… it goes on and on and on, bro. Just how many extremist points of view does someone have to have before they’re an extremist? I know, I know — it’s relative :-)

Compass — nothing wrong with small towns — I grew up in them and haved lived in more of them then I have cities. The only thing you left out is the “rumor mill” and all the gossip floating around, most likely, EVERY small town in America; most certainly in every one of ‘em I’ve lived in :-) But I’m withya — give me a small town over a city anyday of the week. Now, if I could just get Mrs. GTL to see things that-a-way :-)

As an Army officer who defends the 1st Amendment right for Religious Freedom, I am concerned about people claiming a person’s religius views and desires to live according to them as “extremist.” The first colonists came to America to escape religious persecution in England and the Founding Fathers established this country using their religious beliefs as a guideline. In today’s America, it seems chiche to not espouse your faith in God, but it is one of fundamental rights, as well as your right not to worship, belong to a religion, or be an atheist. We could very easily let al Qaeda establish their caliphate and force everyone to be a muslim. Now that is extremism.

I believe John McCain is the most honorable person currently in the election. McCan-Feingold is an attempt to allow the common man participate in the public discourse without having to raise tons of money. May I point out, Senator McCain is living to his pledge of using only federal money IAW his bill while Senator Obama is not. I propose that no one in the media is able to attack John McCain’s integrity because he lives his life accroding to his ideals. he has stumbled along the way (Divorce, a member of the Keating 5), but he generally is living up to the ideals his parents gave him and furhter enforced at Annapolis and in the military. This is why his opponents are attacking GOV Palin, who also is living up to her ideals. She has also stumbled (Troopergate, a pregnent daughter) but she lives accoring to her values, otherwise she would ot have given birth to a handicapped child.

Bottomline, we as Americans value different things and espouse them differently. To quote GEN Powell at the 1996 GOP Convention, “We agree to disagree.” That is the true value and worth of America that we need to defend. The only reason why we have this discussion is because we generally value the same things and disagree on relatively few areas, but these areas are very divisive.
