Obama Flip-Flops On Offshore Oil Drilling — And Kudos To Him For It

More Flip-Flops From The Presidential Candidate; The “Shocker” This Time Is The Flip-Flopper Isn’t Senator McFlipFlop Of Arizona Panama — It’s “Barry”

Barack Obama now embraces offshore oil drilling along with fellow flip-flopper John McCain -- Please be next Nancy Pelosi...Long-time readers of this weblog will recall I have always been a proponent of a government push for both alternative fuel technology development as well as for drilling for crude on our own soil; carefully and with Mother Nature in mind at all times — you know, like those “OLD” Democrats used to advocate.

Recall back in the 1980’s when the reckless Republicans wanted to drill, drill, drill and pave, pave, pave with no regard to life and the environment. That’s when those “OLD” Dems came in and said “No ya’ DON’T! You need to raise that pipeline up so many feet every so often in order for the animals to migrate peacefully. You also need to have emergency spill kits and plans approved by the government before you drill!” I miss those “OLD” Democrats. They possessed common sense versus these so-called “NEW” Democrats such as Nancy Pelosi who would put our lives and our sovereignty in great danger because they want to “save the Earth” (Source: Los Angeles Times) at the expense (that emphasized part is the KEY) of our national security due to our dependence upon TERRORISTS for our fuel and our general well-being. Until just hours ago, ole’ Barry Obama was one of these “NEW” Democrats. Now, The Palm Beach Post’s Michael C. Bender informs us he just might not be against this grave threat to our national security after all as a direct result of our oil dependence on nations who sponsor terrorism.

Oh, indeed — it is an “Obama flip-flop” — more of those types of flip-flops are welcomed by this blogger, by the way. That said, just remember which of the two candidates was the FIRST to be “against drilling for oil before he was against it” — none other than Señor McCain himself (Source: Shreveport Times — July 7th of this year). Despite that fact, expect Rush Limbaugh, his Dittoheads, and other McCainiacs to “conveniently forget” Senator McFlipFlop’s previous solidarity with the “New Democratic Do Nothing And Drill Nothing” Congress on this issue. It’s a “given”. It WILL happen.

Last but not least, you would think such an important development would be the main topic of discussion today on the Internets, in the blogospheres and in the mainstream media, would you? NOPE. It’s more important for the McCainiacs and Obamaniacs to play the “who played the race card first?” (Source: The New York Times) game. I’m personally losing more respect by the minute for BOTH candidates for playing childish games when America has NEVER been in greater danger of economic and military threats in THIS “Generation X’er’s” lifetime. NEVER. Please, my fellow Americans — use your heads and THINK about just how important this presidential election is. PLEASE. I beg you.

Let me bring you back to reality — on this day, at this time (1:30 CST, 2AUG08) — there is nothing more important to our nation’s future than the revelation a common sense home soil oil exploration bill does not necessarily equal an automatic veto from either of the two front-runners’ potential, presidential pen. To put this news into perspective, imagine a “President Pelosi” (Please — IMPEACH HER) who would trade our national security and economic freedom for the life of a snail darter. In my not-so-humble opinion, those who share her point of view are not worthy of holding such important offices in our government, but that’s just MOI. There is a way to drill offshore; to drill that wasteland (and yes, I’ve seen it with my own eyes, have you?) called “ANWR” without destroying our environment and I hold the Democrats accountable to see to it this takes place while I fully expect the G.O.P. to put their “Almighty Dollar” above all else.

Last but not least, now that I’ve delved into the long-term impact of today’s REAL “news”, let’s look at the short-term effect — lower gas prices, and SOON. Oh, I know — the “NEW” Democrats keep trying to tell us advances by our government to permit home-based oil exploration will have zero impact in the short-term. BUNK. Folks who have been reading this blog for a few weeks or more will recall my prediction that gas prices would IMMEDIATELY plummet just on the news we are opening up our homeland for our own big oil development and lo and behold — I WAS CORRECT

A direct quote from my July 6th post entitled “RNC’s New Multi-Million Ad Attacks Easy Target, Barack Obama, For His Official Energy “Policy”:

“… Mr. Obama had better take another look at his so-called “Energy Policy”. It SUCKS. Alternative fuels and 500 mile carburetors? Okay, Sir — WHEN? We need it NOW. This SECOND. America’s suffering greatly, Sir. You say “It would take ten years to start pumping oil domestically” and dismiss the idea on that premise only? Guess what, Sir? The MOMENT our GUTLESS Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the Senate open up ANWR to “Big Oil”, then REGULATE gasoline as the utility it truly is (How can you regulate natural gas as a “utility” and NOT gasoline? Contradictory, isn’t it?) is the moment the Saudi terrorists begin to play fair in the “Big Oil” game. Not only would opening up ANWR get their attention, the value of TERRORIST oil would drop simply on the news alone. Wake up, Mr. Obama, and smell the coffee. …” – The GTL™

Thank God, Mr. Obama has finally caught a slight “whiff” of the coffee floating on the breeze.

    Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic:

“… This strikes me as less of a shift and more as a gesture of sorts to the reality that the major cap and trade legislation next year that Congress will mark up — legislation that will be introduced regardless of who’s president — requires the participation of and compromise from the industry. …”

    Stop The ACLU:

“… Sounds to me like he is hedging his bets, as there is no place that the extremist environmentals will allow drilling to be done. Sounds to me like Barry is simply trying to take the popular position, without meaning it. Sounds to me like, not a flip flop, but, a disingenuous position. Yes, a lie. …”

    Donklephant:

“… So, Obama is putting offshore drilling on the table. Flip-flop or principled shift? On one hand, polls show that around 70% of voters support opening up offshore drilling. That’s a sizable majority and Obama is smart enough not to cede the issue to McCain. …”

I agree. Obama is right to open the door to expanded oil drilling offshore. We need more drilling, more conservation and more nuclear. Of course, it is also important to curb the oil speculators who are stealing our hard-earned money driving up the price of gasoline.

I am all for developing wind, solar and biofuels but nuclear energy is a proven safe and reliable source. I would like to see Obama come out more strongly for expanded nuclear power. France gets about 80% of their energy from nuclear. Anyone who says that America cannot become energy independent is a damn liar and just playing into the hands of the OPEC extortionists and terrorists.

If you read what he said, all he is doing is putting it on the table, and then wants to slap enough restrictions and qualifications to make it impossible for anyone to drill offshore. Sort of like his position on firearms – he want “reasonable” gun control. Code for no guns in private hands. He wants ‘reasonable” regualtions on off shore drilling – code for “over my dead body.”

If Sen. Obama is serious about this, there is an excellent way for him to demonstrate his commitment. As the symbolic leader of the party, the senator should demand that Rep. Pelosi call Congress back to session and deal with this issue NOW.

That would be some change I could live with.

So kudos for Obama for his flip, but ridicule for McCain for the same flip made long before Obama’s? Seems to me McCain’s flip was based on what is good for USA well before the extent of the crisis becam obvious to everyone, while Obama flipped only when drilling had gathered popular support.
