Controversy Of The Day: The New Yorker Magazine Goes GTL™ On Barack And Michelle Obama

“Tasteless, Rude And Offensive”? Surely, But Then Again, Who Am I To Criticize?

The HORROR — The New Yorker’s cover shows the Obama’s… well… here is the “offensive” cover, which is being slammed by Barack Obama and even “Panama John” McCain today:

The Obamas and McCains are shocked and offended by The New Yorker magazine and its latest cover depicting Barack Obama as a Muslim...

Indeed, it IS “offensive” and “tasteless”, but then again, our long-time readers are well-aware of the fact I have a fondness for all of the above, often doing photo manipulations in the spirit of parody, irony and satire. For example, my “tongue-in-cheek” portrayal of “Señor McCain” who was TECHNICALLY born in the nation of Panama:

OOPS... looks like Panama John McCain is disqualified for the presidency as per our Founding Fathers...

So, hey — fair is fair, I suppose. If you wish to run for public office, you should be ready for all sorts of attacks from all different directions. Of COURSE Señor McCain is qualified to run for the presidency and of COURSE Barry Obama is a Christian — but — BUT — one had better demonstrate a sense of humor if they wish to earn MY vote. I would have more respect for Mr. and Mrs. Obama if their reaction to The New Yorker’s magazine cover if he’d have simply chuckled and shrugged the whole thing off as “cute” and “Hey, everybody knows I’m a Christian anyway” rather than in the following manner, courtesy of The Politico and H/T to MemeOrandum:

‘Scare tactic’ — Obama slams Muslim portrayal

By MIKE ALLEN

The Obama campaign is condemning as “tasteless and offensive” a New Yorker magazine cover that depicts Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in a turban, fist-bumping his gun-slinging wife.

An American flag burns in their fireplace.

The New Yorker says it’s satire. It certainly will be candy for cable news.

The Obama campaign quickly condemned the rendering. Spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement: “The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama’s right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree.”

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds quickly e-mailed: “We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it’s tasteless and offensive.” … – The Politico

Cry… me… a… RIVER.

If you don’t like it, don’t buy the magazine. Don’t even LOOK at the magazine. If you don’t like my “Panama John” cracks, move on and thank-you-very-much-for-stopping-by. That’s how it works, folks. And that’s how it REALLY works when one chooses to run for the Oval Office “The Royal Throne of The Oligarchy”. It’s the 1st Amendment and it’s beautiful at its core.

Well, it can be satire and it can be insulting comment and it can be, and I suspect that here lies the reason, a good boost to magazine sales.

Satire – the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

The cover is neither satire nor humorous. Back to the drawing board, New Yorker.
