That’s right, I said “illegal aliens” and I stand by it — that’s what they are:
Definition of illegal:
Something is illegal when it violates a statute, regulation or other law. AND…
Definition of alien:
foreigner: a person who comes from a foreign country; someone who does not owe allegiance to your country
It’s unarguable, the position of those like myself who refer to these so-called “immigrants” as the “ILLEGAL ALIENS” they are. That said, it is SHAMEFUL, the fact that these conservative “activists” against illegal immigration, including Mr. Frederick Dalton Thompson himself, who continue to place the majority of the blame, prevention and cure of our serious national security problems facing our borders and sovereignty, upon the illegal aliens themselves…
Here is how “tough” Mr. F. Dalton Thompson — the latest Hollywood actor -slash- “Savior” of all things “Conservative” — plans to deal with the right-wing “bidness” owners who continually dangle their carrots for labor on the “cheap” and on the backs of brown-skinned wage slaves from Mexico (source: Times’ The Page):
• Attrition through Enforcement: Reduce the number of illegal aliens through increased enforcement against unauthorized alien workers and their employers. Without illegal employment opportunities available, fewer illegal aliens will attempt to enter the country, and many of those illegally in the country now likely will return home. This course of action offers a reasonable alternative to the false choices currently proposed to deal with the 12 million or more aliens already in the U.S. illegally: either arrest and deport them all, or give them all amnesty.
‘Scuse me, Mr. Presidential “wannabe”? What in the HELL does that mean? Now, granted; I’m a college dropout; but this is the way I translate this statement when I cut through the doublespeak:
“Crack down on the employers by deporting illegal aliens or granting them amnesty.”
WHAT? Oh, yeah; that’s REAL “tough”, Mr. Wannabe. How about this one instead: a MANDATORY ten-year prison sentence (medium security) with zero chance of parole for ANY employer who knowingly hires illegal aliens to boost their bottom lines and assault our shrinking middle class? Not a great fan of the RICO Act, but this would be a great opportunity to utilize it to crack down on the ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS who lure these people; God knows who they ARE; across our borders to give them 8-12 hours of hard work and the rest of their 24-hour day to do God knows what.
Oh, and I’m fully AWARE the left-wing blogosphere will label me as a “conservative in sheep’s clothing” for my stance on this issue, but in the REAL world; around the watercoolers of the REAL offices of America; my point of view is OVERWHELMINGLY shared by not only the ordinary, common, everyday American Citizens on the right, it is OVERWHELMINGLY shared by my FELLOW LIBERALS. The fact IS, while the “lefty blogosphere” shuns me as some sort of a “rebel lefty” on this issue, this blog enjoys somewhere close to 100,000 monthly visitors counting feeds, and I’m BETTING it is because this is one of the FEW places in the blogosphere where folks can come to read the thoughts of honest Americans who lean a little bit to the left while taking issues one by one; damn the Democratic Party talking points memos. And yes, I’m PROUD of that fact. That’s why we’re here.
As for the illegal alien problem in our nation, OBVIOUSLY, we either need to enforce our border security and immigration laws, or dump the USA Patriot Act altogether; for it is a SHAM for our government to tell us we are in such great danger we must all give up our Constitutional civil liberties while leaving our borders WIDE OPEN. Both cannot be true. In other words, I favor BOTH actions. And, as for the “Michelle Malkins” and “Tom Tancredos” of the world who favor punishing the children of illegal aliens, who, as MINORS, were smuggled into this country and grew up to become productive members of our society, I say, SHAME ON THEM. Grant THEM amnesty and JUST SAY “NO” to any future smugglers and their children so there is no longer a “carrot” to be dangled for these criminal parents. Tweak the so-called “Dream Act” to reflect our nation’s best interests (and mine, of course), and I’ll stand with Harry Reid, Joe Biden, and Dick Durbin myself.
While we’re at it, I wonder why Mr. Frederick Dalton Thompson has failed to OPINE on the government’s practice of allowing pregnant “baby poppers” from Mexico to sneak past our border security, force their birth bills upon we Americans in the emergency rooms, and “little Pedro” is a Citizen for life? What is the HOLLYWOOD actor’s stance on THAT issue? Oh, that’s right — he hasn’t even MENTIONED it yet. Some “Presidential hopeful”, INDEED.
As with any problem in our country — FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL. The money leads almost entirely to corporations led by greedy, tax-dodging, right-wing “bidnessmen”. Oh, sure; there’s the occasional “nanny” who is paid under the table by a spoiled, left-wing penny-pincher who enjoys having a brown-skinned wage slave or three around to give her French pedicures and scrape the leaves out of her pool, but that’s the least of our problems. Five years for them; ten years for all upper management of the LLC’s and coporations who willingly violate our laws by opening the doors to these people. Come and visit anytime — come and apply for Citizenship ANYTIME — but do it legally, is my point of view. I wouldn’t be here weren’t for the fact my grandparents migrated to America and they did it through the FRONT DOOR, for God’s Sake.
The out-of-touch Senator (and an “also-ran wannabe” for Heir To King George II’s Royal Throne) John McCain once dared a bunch of back-breaking union workers to pick lettuce for fifty bucks an hour to a chorus of where do i sign’s. The fact is, if you pay American Citizens an HONEST wage to break their backs, they WILL STEP UP and do an honest day’s work for you. Just look at our plumbers and EMT’s who have to deal with human waste for a living for more information on that one — neither industry being historically plagued by competition from illegal criminals who stroll in to do their jobs for a fraction of the price. Were this the case, my fellow Americans would be posing the questions:
“Who ELSE is willing to scrape human faces off of the asphalt if we don’t hire illegal aliens to do it for us?”
OR:
“Who ELSE is willing to stick their hands down a filthy, overflowing toilet full of human feces if we don’t hire illegal aliens to do it for us?”
Here’s a NEWSFLASH for ya: I’m [grudgingly] HAPPY to pay the plumber his 35 bucks an hour and I’ll be just as [grudgingly] HAPPY to pay twice as much for a damned tomatoe if that means a return of the American middle class and a retreat from this stinking, fascist OLIGARCHY we have become today.

The Patriot Act needs to be repealed immediately. Period. That is bottom line, top line, and all the lines in between.
Since I’ve been advocating hitting the employers of illegals since day one I can’t find fault with Thompson’s concept. It makes sense to (also college uneducated) me.
Jail and fine the employers? I can’t go there. We have too damned many people in jail/prison now. Fine, you betcha. If they keep hiring the illegals fine them out of business.

If you release the vast majority of other non-violent offenders from prison (which I favor), there would be PLENTY of room to jail the employers
12:33 pm on October 24th, 2007 5
You surely aren’t wrong about that.

You’re absolutely right, no offense, I mean correct.
The “illegals” are here for one thing… Money. Take away the money incentive and the illegals will take themselves right back to their country of origin. BIG FINES for businesses that hire illegals; no exceptions, no second chances. In two or three years GTL will get his wish for 4 dollar tomatoes.
But if we think this thing through a little farther… People in general won’t put up with $4 tomatoes for long. Companies that import produce from, say, Latin America will start selling tomatoes at $2 each. Pretty soon, all the American tomatoe farmers have either gone out of business, outsourced overseas, or started doing something else with their land. But there won’t be any more tomatoes growing in the U.S., people will buy the cheaper tomatoes, regardless of where they are grown. (Sort of the way Wal-Mart works)
I had a conversation a while back with a friend who owns a small machine shop. I took the same stand, that employers are a big part of the problem and they should be fined heavily for hiring illegals. My friend replied sheepishly that it would put him out of business (I was surprised to learn that he knowingly employed a number of illegals). He said that all his competitors are doing it and if he didn’t, he would have to raise his prices and would lose too much business in a very competitive industry.
I continued to hold the hard line, but if the government does take this approach, the standards have to be applied equally to everyone.
And, the government will have to BAN imports of goods and services that are affected by the change. Tomatoes cannot be imported, machined parts cannot be imported, etc. in order to keep the playing field level. Americans will then be forced to buy $4 tomatoes or have no tomatoes at all.
Americans will no longer have a choice.

F$B- seems you already don’t have much of a choice using your logic. either the economy only works with illegal labor built in, or $4 tomatoes. keep thinking things through real good like you do.

What you’ll find is that the farms will switch to automation. There will be a slight cost rise the first year then everything evens out. Right now, illegal labor is slightly cheaper than making the switch to automated farming (where a couple of people managing machines can cover the same area as 10-100 illegal alien pickers). But when that cost-benefit ratio changes, the machines will come in.
A few crops are hard to pick with machines – only recently have really good machines come out for them and those machines are still expensive. But the automation problem is basically solved.

F&B,
I thought Republicans believed in capitalism and the free market. Are you saying the government should be advocating protectionism?
Hmmm. Come on, ‘fess up, you’re really a socialist who’s satiring conservatives, right?

Hey Paul – you’re sort of right, there is some sarcasm in my post. I tend to favor unprotected free markets, including a free labor market, but if there is going to be protectionism it must be applied even-handedly.
DaveM – there are many sources of information on farm automation, including automated tomatoe pickers. (Look up Califormia Tomato Machinery) Gawd, aren’t U.S. designers brilliant when the government doesn’t get involved? Imagine that, automated tomato pickers! The problem is that they are very pricey and out of the reach of most small to medium farmers (i.e. the backbone of America). A change to automated farming will drive many of these mom & pop farms out of business (in a Wal-Mart-like fashion).
I believe Americans should have a choice whether to buy 40 cent tomatoes picked by whomever, or $4 tomatoes organically grown in cow dung and picked by American ex-hippies on their little slice of the American dream.
Either way, we really don’t have to worry about it. The current situation isn’t likely to change anytime soon.
Maybe there’s another new law in here somewhere… How many posts does it take in any given liberal blog before the discussion includes Wal-Mart???
4:41 pm on October 26th, 2007 13
no, it’s not about automated pickers.
and no it would not put maandpa’s out of business, that’s already been done to a great extent.
“golly gee, aren’t americans great…”, like your buddy who takes advantage of illegal labor?

One effective way to establish credibility is to admit when your opponent makes a point. All that pessimism, paranoia, and hate will eat you alive.
I live in the mid-west where there is a large number of operating Mom & Pop farms. My uncle still farms the old family farm where he still grows tobacco (aka ‘backy) like they have on that farm for almost 150 years. If the liberals had their way Tobacco would be illegal and pot would be legal. He might make more money growing the latter
But the fact is, the Mom & Pops are still there. There are fewer of them but they’re not gone yet.
You clearly don’t understand ‘illegals’. Have you ever taken the time to get to know any of them. They are actually PEOPLE, just like the rest of us. They have hopes and dreams and ideas. They help other people sometimes, hurt people sometimes. They eat, they drink, they laugh, they cry, and many want to go ‘home’ after making enough money to get by for awhile. Some want to stay here to make a better life for their families. In all, they are a lot like most other ‘Americans’ they’re just here…”illegally.”
And, Yes. Americans are great. May God Bless Us All!

gee willikers F&B, you mean to tell me you’re a hayseed?
i love how it’s ‘in’ now for conservatives to ‘feel bad’ for the left, and act all concerned. so funny.
you really socked it to me here though-

wow man, that sooo deep…you mean they’re…real? thanks Mr. Humanitarian Illegal Labor Advocate.

F&B: I hope you’re sitting down – I agree with a good part of what you had to say.
Back in the day I did stoop labor with the migrants. Worked the vegetable fields, picked fruit. Hard damn work for not much money and I was glad to get it. Back then there wasn’t much thought given to legal/illegal.
The vast majority of the illegal immigrants truly are hard working, honest folk who are trying to feed their family. Immigration law makes it damn hard for them to cross over legally. A person with a family to feed is going to go where they have the means to support them. If that means border jumping …
We do need to expunge our country of illegals. But we also need to make it possible for a person to get here legally. Those hard working, honest folk whose only crime is hopping the border need to be made legal if they want to stay.
