The New York Times calls him “embattled”. As you can see, I prefer to use the word “disgraced”:
Embattled Attorney General Resigns
By STEVEN LEE MYERS and PHILIP SHENON
WACO, Tex., Aug. 27 — Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, announced his resignation in Washington today, declaring that he had “lived the American dream” by being able to lead the Justice Department. …”
(Snip!)
“… Mr. Gonzales’s resignation is the latest in a series of high-level departures that has reshaped the end of Mr. Bush’s second term. Karl Rove, another of Mr. Bush’s close circle of aides from Texas, stepped down two weeks ago. …” – The NYT
Took long enough, didn’t it? And — this latest White House crook to fall didn’t even cite that old, worn out line for his departure as being “to spend more time with my family” like his other fellow felons have; probably the biggest surprise of all in this story…
Now, the proper thing to do now would be to indict Alberto for committing purjury first, followed by prosectution and incarceration for his criminal abuses of our 4th Amendment civil liberties under the USA Patriot Act directly afterward; but I’m not holding my breath on that one, of course.
And, in keeping with the tradition of being the two-bit purjurer he is and always will be…
“… On Saturday night Mr. Gonzales was contacted by his press spokesman to ask how the department should respond to inquiries from reporters about rumors of his resignation, and he told the spokesman to deny the reports. …”
Of COURSE, he denied it — that’s exactly what we would expect from a lying, two-bit purjurer.
In these brief moments, while we await his neocon successor, Democracy has leapt progressively forward, if for only a day or three.
GOOD RIDDANCE, JERK.

Just goes to show that witch hunts do work. Just keep hounding them long enough and you can drive anyone away.
The democrats have set a dangerous precedent for the treatment of the opposition. They have mired their own time and our government in partisan witch hunts for long enough. Payback will be hell.

this IS the payback, and hell on the neo-cons, and, in turn on the country.
and , oh yeah, rightwingdings would never hound anybody…they’re the nice guys?

Name calling (crook, jerk, lying, two-bit perjurer)adds nothing to the discussion.

This is NOT the payback, Gonzales is just one player in this scandal. We cannot declare victory now. The investigations into this administration must continue, even after 2008 if needed, until those guilty are punished. Quitting your job should not make you immune to crime.

Patisan witch hunts, huh? Oh, I see. The crucifiction of Bill Clinton for his sexual escapade in the oval office wasn’t a witch hunt………really. OK, I’ll take your “patriotic”, “non-partisan” word for it. Nice to know that you saved countless lives by trying to impeach him for THAT one………..sheesh………..

Mr. Short, i most graciously agree with you.
we the people need to teach our officials a lesson, with each new generation, just like the little spoiled kids they are, that goes for both fascist right wings, not just the gop.

i don’t know buddy…name calling sure was effective after 9/11, remember how everyone was called unpatriotic who didn’t want war? do you remember freedom fries?
besides, name calling can be funny, for instance:
george w. bush is a champanzee, and gonzales is just his latest patsy.

Interesting point of view, very well educated, I’m sure. Except, President Bush is, well, the President of the United States. And here we are, name-calling on a blog… Hmmmmm… I wonder who really is the chimpanzee?

F&B,
Well, there are parts of the country where you could put a pig with an R or D up against his name and get them elected. Is a chimp really so implausible?

Hello Paul. Haven’t heard from you in a while.
Maybe not completely implausible. I’m still pretty sure that President Clinton was part snake. Not sure what the other part was…

Chameleon, I think.
